AC Controls - Do you restrict?? - johmcg - 03-24-2024

I have always let guests adjust the temperature  however now that it's getting warmer my last guests ran the AC on the lowest setting nonstop (it's not even that hot out yet). I have my HVAC guy coming but I suspect it "froze" or something and now I'm thinking of restricting the thermostat. Do other hosts lock or restrict the AC or have rules in place? We have a "smart" thermostat but I'm not sure if I can set a certain range.

You will likely end up with bad reviews if you restrict the AC.

We have a place in Vegas and in the summer it gets to 120+. The AC is basically running nonstop and it's not one of the more "budget friendly" brands (Rheem). If you're AC is having issues from being used it's probably a maintenance issue. If the thermostat can make it go down to 60 or whatever the lowest setting is on your thermostat your unit should be able to handle it for extended periods of time.

If I cannot control the HVAC system that is an automatic 1 star. Guests want to spend their holiday at a temperature that is comfortable temperature for them. The guests that abuse it may be few and far between - that's where guest screening comes in.

I always tell my guests to set the thermostat to whatever they feel like so they are comfortable.

You probably just need to have the tech add some Freon.. it happens early on in the new season.

We have an ecobee thermostat and it let's us set the range and have never gotten any complaints, although we keep it at a very reasonable range. This won't stop someone from opening all your windows however and letting it run nonstop.

We have a Nest and we set a range but don't have any rules for guests otherwise.
