Redflags to lookout for - ChrisFromTheOC - 12-01-2023

Let's start a thread with common scams so hosts are aware of red flags to look for when dealing with guests.

- For those with strict cancellation policies, when guests ask to modify the reservation to 30 days out that's usually a sign that they are trying to get around the policy.

ALWAYS WATCH OUT FOR THE LAST MINUTE REQUESTS!! Of all my nightmare guests, almost every single one of them was a last minute booking request until I turned it off.

Guests that ask for a discount when booking. These guests will always find something wrong later on. After dealing with 6 of these I just tell guests that the dates are not available.

For sure the discount crowd. You would think that people appreciate it when you give them a discount but then they just figure they can squeeze you for more later.. and they seem never to be satisfied.

For me only negative reviews are a dealbreaker. Everything else I’d be ok with. My listing is a small 1 bedroom cabin in the middle of the woods anyways, it's mostly just couples looking to get away.

One guy told me he only needed the room for an hour...

I've had people message and ask for the property address and then ask if they can come over and look around inside before they book.. like no. I have plenty of pictures.

redflags for me are same day bookings, making demands and asking for discounts.

Lately, I've been getting contacted by people who request "long term stays" and ask to contact me off the platform.
