We recently declined a request from a guest due to a previous review about damages from their last stay.

Is it against any policy or a bad idea to tell the guest that we're declining their request because of this review from the previous host?

I declined a guest this week because the last review indicated they left beer bottles everywhere. I told her that was the reason I was declining. She came back and asked that I reconsider because she and her husband were not there, they made the reservation for a family member. I had to point out that, too was against the airbnb rules.

My advice to her was to rent as often as any host would let her so that she could push the bad review down and replace it with good reviews. Guests need to know how reviews will impact them.

Just use a courteous, straightforward response:

“Thank you for your inquiry. Unfortunately we are unable to accommodate your party due to feedback on past booking activity."

Who cares if they get angry. Guests need to be held accountable. I very openly tell them I'm declining because of past behavior.

Pick the 'we're uncomfortable' reason and note 'negative review history' in the commentary. It's factual and you won't be hit for it.

God forbid that damaging someone's listing would lead to consequences...

I would just decline without an explanation. Sometimes the explanations just make them angry, spoken from experience.

I do this as well. No need to explain everything.
